This Day in Disney History- January 19
Welcome back to our magical journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- January 19.
January 19th featured the release of a new Mickey Mouse cartoon, the beginning of the Pixar revolution, and the christening of a new Disney ship. So, let’s get into it!
Mickey’s Man Friday Released (1935)
On this day in 1935, Mickey’s Man Friday was released.
This Mickey Mouse short, finds the Disney star stranded on a desert island where he encounters a native named Friday. Everything goes fine until the duo is attacked by cannibals!
So Dear to My Heart (1949)
On this day in 1949, So Dear to My Heart was released.
Starring Bobby Driscoll, Luana Patten, and Burl Ives, the film combined live-action and animation to tell the story of Jeremiah, a boy who adopts a lamb named Danny.
Production Begins on Toy Story (1993)
On this day in 1993, production began on Toy Story.
The first full-length feature film created by Pixar, the movie would go on to revolutionize the animation industry. Toy Story would eventually be released in November of 1995, and launch a partnership between Pixar and Disney.
Teamo Supremo Debuts (2002)
On this day in 2002, Teamo Supremo debuted on Disney’s One Saturday Morning.
The animated series was created by Phil Walsh and told the story of three superheros: Captain Crandall, Skate Lad, and Rope Girl. The show would eventually also air on Toon Disney.
Disney Dream Christened (2011)
On this day in 2011, the Disney Dream was officially christened at Port Canaveral, Florida.
For the ceremony, a 16-foot “champagne” bottle was hoisted across the bow of the new ship. 3,000 people were on hand for the ceremony, which also featured a performance by Jennifer Hudson.
Toy Story Pizza Planet Arcade Closes (2016)
On this day in 2016, Toy Story Pizza Planet Arcade closed at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
The counter service restaurant and arcade was inspired by the Pizza Planet franchise from Toy Story.
Hall of Presidents Closes (2021)
Finally, on this day in 2021, the Hall of Presidents closed for refurbishment.
The attraction was closed to facilitate the addition of an Audio Animatronic of President Joe Biden.
