Eddie Murphy Will Not Appear in the New Haunted Mansion Movie

One of the Disney movies that I am most looking forward to in the upcoming year, is Disney’s second attempt at a Haunted Mansion movie.

For those of you who don’t remember, in 2003 Disney released their first film adaptation of the Haunted Mansion. The movie starred Eddie Murphy as a realtor who, along with his family, became trapped inside a haunted house.

While the film was largely panned by critics, it still managed to double its budget at the box office, and bring a score of Haunted Mansion characters and references to the big screen.

For a young Disney fan like me, the original Haunted Mansion film was a ton of fun. It featured characters I had come to know in the parks, Easter-eggs I could point out, and of course Eddie Murphy.

While the upcoming Haunted Mansion film will surly take on a darker tone than the original, there has been speculation about whether Eddie Murphy could appear in the reboot, potentially to tie the two films together.

When speaking to Entertainment Tonight however, it seems as if the legendary comic will not be returning to the Haunted Mansion after all. Looking back on the 2003 film, Murphy commented

“I did a Haunted Mansion movie, and it wasn’t very good, so I don’t know if they want to bring the old baggage and have me stinking up the new one.”

While that seems to close the book on Murphy’s return, it does not necessarily mean the two films won’t connect in some capacity. I guess we will have to wait and see.

The Future Haunted Mansion

The new version of the Haunted Mansion will star Jamie Lee Curtis, Owen Wilson, Jared Leto, Winona Ryder, Danny Devito, Rosario Dawson and Hasan Minaj.

The film will follow the story of Gabbie (Dawson), a single mom who purchases a strangely affordable mansion in New Orleans. When she discovers that the house is already occupied by a collection of ghosts she turns to a priest, paranormal expert, psychic and historian to try and exorcise the mansion.
