Firefly Star (Jokingly) Declares Herself A Disney Princess

Over the last two decades, Disney has acquired a innumerable amount of characters under the umbrella of new franchises. From Star Wars and Marvel, to the characters of Avatar, all kinds of characters that were never associated with the Walt Disney Company are now officially Disney characters.

One of the most diverse purchases Disney has made was its 2009 acquisition of Fox. Under the Fox umbrella, Disney acquired the rights to tons of television shows and movie characters including the Simpsons, Ice Age Characters and the X-Men.

One of the more underrated properties that Disney acquired from Fox however, was Joss Wheldon’s 2002 space Western Firefly.

A Cult Classic

For those who don’t know, Firefly followed the story of the ragtag crew of the Serenity as they traveled the galaxy. Led by captain Malcolm Reynolds, the crew eventually finds themselves on the run for harboring a pair of high-value fugitives.

Despite only lasting one season, the show has gained a cult following and has remained as popular as ever.

A New Disney Princess?

Now that Firefly is streaming on Disney +, Jewel Staite, who played shop mechanic Kalee Frye has declared herself a Disney Princess!

After Staite’s family found out that Firefly was on Disney+, the actress finally got the royal recognition she deserved. She then took to Twitter, joking that she was “basically Ariel now”.

My family has only just now discovered that Firefly is on Disney+ which means they’ve only just now discovered that I am a Disney Princess by default, I don’t make the rules, I am basically Ariel now

Jewel humbly notes that she doesn’t make the rules, so she reluctantly will have to live her life out as a Disney Princess.

While Jewel’s tweet was obviously sent tongue-in-cheek, the members of the Disney Princess club are always expanding. Maybe, just maybe, even a former Fox character has a shot at joining the club.
