This Day in Disney History- January 15
Welcome back to our continuing journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company! Today were are taking a look at this day in Disney history- January 15.
January 15th featured the debut of two Tomorrowland classics, a new pavilion for EPCOT Center, and a return to the world of Disney’s The Lion King. So let’s get going!
Spare the Rod Released (1954)
On this day in 1954, the Donald Duck short Spare the Rod was released.
Directed by Jack Hannah, the cartoon features Donald attempting to handle his troublesome nephews using psychology without losing his temper.
Space Mountain Opens (1975)
On this day in 1975, Space Mountain opened in the Magic Kingdom!
Walt Disney World’s first roller coaster, the attraction was originally sponsored by RCA. On hand for the grand opening festivities were a band of 2,000 high school students and Colonel James Irwin, the pilot of the Lunar Module on Apollo XV.
Carousel of Progress Opens (1975)
Also opening on this day in 1975 was the Carousel of Progress.
The attraction was conceived as a way to showcase 100 years of innovation for the 1964 World’s Fair.
Following its debut at the World’s Fair, the Carousel of Progress moved to Disneyland, before being relocated to Florida.
The Living Seas Opens (1986)
On this day in 1986, The Living Seas opened in EPCOT Center.
The first new pavilion to be added to Future World, the Living Seas featured the largest indoor aquarium ever built. In addition to the underwater environment the pavilion also housed a preshow, Seabase Alpha, and the Coral Reef Restaurant.
Michael Eisner Launches the Disney Decade (1990)
On this day in 1990, Michael Eisner announced the launch of the Disney Decade.
Eisner promised massive expansion of Walt Disney World during the 90s, including a fourth theme park, new resorts, a Soviet Union pavilion for EPCOT Center, and 16 new attractions for the Disney-MGM Studios.
Disney’s All Star Movies Opens (1999)
On this day in 1999, Disney’s All Star Movies Resort opened.
The final of the three All Star Resorts, the All-Star Movies features sections dedicated to The Mighty Ducks, 101 Dalmatians, Herbie the Love Bug and Toy Story.
The Lion Guard Premieres (2016)
On this day in 2016, The Lion Guard premiered on Disney Junior.
The new children’s show starred Kion, the son of Simba and Nala. The show also featured the return of many Lion King alumni including Timon, Pumbaa, Simba and Nala.
WandaVision Debuts (2021)
On this day in 2021, WandaVision debuted on Disney +.
Set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the show featured Wanda Maximoff and Vision living an idealized suburban life, although everything may not be as it seems.
