Construction Begins on Pacific Wharf Transformation at Disney’s California Adventure
Disneyland has finally started work on Pacific Wharf’s transformation at Disney’s California Adventure.
For those of you who don’t know, Pacific Wharf is large outdoor food court inspired by a California Central Coast fishing village. The stylized dining area has been a staple of Disney’s California Adventure since it opened in 2001, and has remained largely unchanged.
At the 2022 D23 Expo however, Disney announced that Pacific Wharf would be re-imagined into San Fransokyo from the company’s Big Hero 6 film.
“Pacific Wharf in Disney California Adventure park will be re-imagined to San Fransokyo from ‘Big Hero 6’. A place where East meets West and technology meets tradition,” according to Disneyland officials.
An Alternate History
In case you are unfamiliar with Big Hero 6, San Fransokyo was the central location of film. The city is an alternate history version of San Francisco that was built after the 1906 earthquake.
Because of the large number of Japanese immigrants who helped rebuild the city, and the combination of Japanese and American architecture, residents renamed the city San Fransokyo. It is in this city that Hiro Hamada and Baymax have most of their adventures.
A Stark Transition
Disney will have its work cut out for it transforming a Monterey cost fishing village into a futuristic bustling city.
The current Pacific Wharf features a number of quick service restaurants including: Ghirardelli Soda Fountain and Chocolate Shop, Lucky Fortune Cookery, Pacific Wharf Cafe, Rita’s Baja Blenders, Cocina Cucamonga Mexican Grill, and Pacific Wharf Distribution Co.
When completed the San Fransokyo area will include dining options as before, but also a new Baymax meet-and-greet.
Architecturally, the area will be anchored by a the Torii Gate Bridge. The monument is a Shinto shrine-inspired version of the Golden Gate Bridge.
