Welcome back to our magical journey through the history of the Walt Disney Company. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- January 11!
January 11th featured a reunion on Main Street, the opening of a Walt Disney World hotel, and Disney’s first Marvel attraction. So, let’s get into it!
Disneyland’s 35 Anniversary Begins (1990)
On this day in 1990, Disneyland kicked off its 35th anniversary celebration.
In honor of the park’s anniversary Art Linkletter, Bob Cummings and Ronald Reagan, who hosted the park’s Grand Opening broadcast, reunited on Main Street USA!
Disney’s Swan Resort Opens (1990)
Also on this day in 1990, The Swan Resort had its grand opening in Walt Disney World.
Designed by architect Michael Graves, the 12-story hotel was constructed on Crescent Lake between Epcot and the Disney-MGM Studios. The new hotel was owned by the Tishman Hotel Corporation and operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts.
Superstar Limo Closes (2002)
On this day in 2002, Superstar Limo closed at Disney’s California Adventure.
An opening day attraction, Superstar Limo was a dark ride that brought guests face to face with celebrities in Hollywood.
Playhouse Disney- Live On Stage Closes (2011)
On this day in 2011- Playhouse Disney- Live on Stage closed at Disney’s California Adventure.
The show featured various characters from popular Playhouse Disney children’s programs. The attraction would eventually reopen as Disney Junior- Live on Stage!
Rivers of America Closes (2016)
On this day in 2016, the Mark Twain Riverboat, Fantasmic! and the other Rivers of America attractions temporarily closed to facilitate the construction of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
Iron Man Experience Opens (2017)
On this day in 2017 the Iron Man Experience opened in Hong Kong Disneyland’s Tomorrowland.
The new motion simulator attraction is set in the fictional Stark Expo, where Tony Stark recruits guests to help fend of an alien attack! The Iron Man Experience was the first Disney attraction based on a Marvel property.
