James Cameron Confirms More ‘Avatar’ Sequels Will Be Made
Avatar has proven its continued popularity upon the release of its sequel The Way of Water. Now, James Cameron confirms that more Avatar sequels will be made!
Avatar: The Way of Water
MickeyBlog has been keeping you up to date with all things Avatar. It’s been interesting to see how the movie fared after so much speculation about its box office numbers.
The Hollywood Reporter shares that James Cameron says Avatar: The Way of Water will “easily” pass its break-even point. This is big news considering its budget was enormous!
So much so, Cameron said it had to become the third or fourth highest-grossing film of all time just to break even. Another thing Cameron mentioned is that although he has several sequels up his sleeve, their release depended upon how Avatar 2 fared.
On a recent episode of Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace? on HBO, Cameron reported that his film crossed $1.5 billion at the box office. To give you an idea of what that looks like, the movie surpassed Top Gun: Maverick, becoming the highest-grossing film in 2022!
James Cameron Confirms More Avatar Sequels
In the interview, Cameron bluntly admitted, “It looks like just with the momentum that the film has now that will easily pass our break even in the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wiggle out of this, I’m gonna have to do these other sequels.”
He added, “I know what I’m going to be doing the next six or seven years. The point is we’re going to be okay.”
Cameron said, “I’m sure that we’ll have a discussion soon with the top folks at Disney about the game plan going forward for Avatar 3, which is already in the can – we’ve already captured and photographed the whole film so we’re in extended post-production to do all that CG magic.”
“And then Avatar 4 and 5 are both written. We even have some of 4 in the can.”
“We’ve begun a franchise at this point. We’ve begun a saga that can now play out over multiple films.”
Cameron says that although it was reported that the movie had to earn at least $2 billion, he never officially gave that number. He simply said it would have to be among the highest-grossing films in history.
Cameron clarified, “The number is actually less.” Avatar: The Way of Water had an estimated $400 million production budget.
Combined with marketing costs, that brings the total price tag to roughly $600 million, according to sources. Avatar 3 is scheduled to premiere on December 20, 2024.
We’re happy to hear that James Cameron has finally made it official, and more Avatar sequels are on the way!
