‘Avatar 2’ Draws New Year’s Crowds, Climbs Highest Grossing Chart
Well on its way to a Top 10 (or better) placement on the list of highest grossing films, “Avatar: The Way of Water” continued to draw crowds worldwide to theatres this weekend.
After making $435 million globally on its opening weekend, according to a Variety article, the performance of James Cameron’s recent epic struggled a bit over Christmas weekend due to winter storms and extremely cold temperatures across the nation.
Though this celebratory weekend also lagged behind estimates, New Year’s Eve crowds did provide a boost in attendance for the high-budget film, especially outside of the United States. In fact, in comparing New Year’s Eve to Christmas Eve, more people journeyed out to see the film, a joint venture between Walt Disney Studios, 20th Century Studios and Lightstorm Entertainment.
‘Way of Water’ By the Numbers
According to an article published by entertainment guru Deadline, the film made $27.9 million dollars domestically yesterday compared to the $22.2 million dollars that the film brought in on Christmas Eve. Globally, the film’s earning exploded by 5.8 percent ($186.7 million) as compared to the previous weekend, according to Twitter entertainment expert Luiz Fernado.
With thousands predicted to head to theatres today (and little else new in theatres right now), “Avatar: The Way of Water” should continue its climb into the Top 10 grossing films of all time with this weekend’s total sales.
Right now, the film sits at #14 with a total of $1.3 billion in sales thanks to its ever-growing accumulation of 4-day sales.
#AvatarTheWayOfWater crossed 950M overseas, 1.3B GLOBALLY, after massive 186.7M overseas on 3rd weekend, up +5.8% from last weekend, for a 956.9M intl.cume over 52 markets
1.38B at Global #BoxOffice.

With Fernado’s projections stated in a Tweet today, “Avatar: The Way of Water” should climb to at least the 11th spot on the list by mid-week, topping “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Frozen,” and “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
If and when that happens, the film will continue on its quest to join the elusie club of films grossing over $2 billion, which includes the original “Avatar” film, “Titanic,” and two Avengers films, and “Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens.” It’s widely reported that “Avatar 2” needs to hit that mark in order to be profitable.
