Why Avatar is Crushing the Box Office… Again
Avatar is crushing the box office… again, but are you really that surprised? James Cameron created the highest-grossing film of all time in the late 90s with Titanic. Then, just for kicks and giggles, he did it again in the late 2000’s.
Cameron missed doing it for the third decade in a row, but only by a couple years. The director said (likely in jest) that in order to break even, Avatar: The Way of Water would need to break the $2 billion mark (billion with a capital B!).
In its third weekend, Avatar has crossed the $1.2 billion mark. On its third Friday in theaters, it made $24.2 million. That’s more than Top Gun: Maverick did earlier this year (with a mere $14.2 million).
James Cameron has taken a simple story that we’ve heard before (colonization, cultural divides, protecting what you love), and overlaid that with a world we really could have never imagined before. Familiarity helps audiences connect emotionally and fall in love with the stunning visuals and effects that make Avatar enthralling.
I’ll just say this again: Avatar is crushing the box office… again, but really, are you that surprised? If you’d like to read a SPOILER FREE review of Avatar: The Way of Water, check out this article or the video below.
