Avatar: The Way of Water Slightly Underperforms at the Box Office
Yesterday was a massive day for Avatar fans as it marked the debut of the much-anticipated sequel – Avatar: The Way of Water. So how did James Cameron’s sequel do at the Friday box office? According to reports it underperformed slightly.
According to a recent piece in Collider, the film brought in $53 million on its first day of release (this includes $17 million from Thursday previews.) The film was predicted to bring in between $150 – $175 million at the domestic box office on its opening weekend. In light of yesterday’s opening, these figures have been lowers to $130 – $150 million.
So how does Avatar: The Way of Water stack up when compared to other Disney releases? This puts the film at number 6 for the year. According to Collider, its is behind other films like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($90.7 million), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ($84.2 million), Thor: Love and Thunder ($69.5 million), Jurassic World Dominion ($59.5 million) and The Batman ($56.6 million.)
However, hope is not lost. The first Avatar film was a bit of a sleeper. It didn’t perform well at first (making only $77 million on its opening weekend) and $26 million on opening day. That means that Way of Water will still outperform the original.
However, the sequel does have some tough shoes to fill. As Collider tells us, the first Avatar film would go on to be the highest-grossing film in history pulling in $760 million at the domestic box office and $2.9 billion globally.
The film is doing well with critics though. It has an A CinemaScore and is currently sitting at an 82% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
