Celebrating Walt Disney’s Legacy 56 Years After His Passing
Today marks a moment in history that Disney fans will never forget. Join us in celebrating Walt Disney’s legacy, 56 years after his passing.
Humble Beginnings
Walter Elias Disney was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 5, 1901. One of five children, he was raised on a farm in Marceline, Missouri.
At an early age, he took an interest in art, selling his drawings to neighbors at 7 years old. In high school, Disney attended the Academy of Fine Arts.
After the war, Walt began his career as an advertising cartoonist in Kansas City. In 1920, he marketed his first animated cartoons, later perfecting the art of combining live-action with animation.
In 1923, Walt set off for Hollywood with nothing but $40 in his pocket and a few drawing materials. He joined forces with brother Roy O. Disney, beginning a production operation in the back of a Hollywood real estate office.
Animation
Our beloved Mickey Mouse was created in 1928, making his debut in the famous Steamboat Willie cartoon. This was an unprecedented event, as it was the first fully synchronized sound cartoon to ever be released.
Walt had a vision to perfect the art of animation. On December 21, 1937, Snow White and the Deven Dwarfs premiered as the first-ever, full-length animated musical feature.
The movie is still considered one of the greatest feats in motion picture history. As we all know, Walt went on to complete many more full-length animated classics, treasured by fans.
Disneyland
In 1955, Disneyland opened, changing the course of history. To this day, Southern California’s original Disney Park has a larger cumulative attendance than any other theme park in the world.
Walt Disney World followed, opening in 1971. Unfortunately, Walt never got to witness the full effect of his success in Florida.
Death
The beloved icon passed away, at age 65, on December 15, 1966. His partner in crime, brother Roy O. Disney ended up finishing the building of Walt Disney World Resort.
Although fans still mourn his passing, Disney left his magic behind in so many different ways. From animation and movies to Parks and experiences, The Walt Disney Company continues to flourish.
One of Walt’s famous quotes sums up his life perfectly, inspiring us to follow his lead. “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
Today, the Disney community unites to remember a man that is near and dear to our hearts. Join us in celebrating Walt Disney’s legacy, which continues to hold strong 56 years after his passing.
