Robert Downey Jr. Reveals What He Misses About the MCU
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come to dominate popular culture in a way that few, if any, other properties ever had. As we speak, the MCU is the undisputed champion of the box office in 2022, and has managed to release three separate television series.
While the MCU has become a diverse and wide ranging universe, the heart of the entire property has always been Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man.
The MCU as we know it today was born out of Downey’s 2008 film Iron Man. Portraying the billionaire genius Tony Stark, Downey Jr. would go on to appear in 11 MCU movies over the next 11 years.
In 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr. finally exited the franchise, when Tony Stark sacrificed himself to save the universe. Since this that moment however, the specter of Tony Stark, and Downey himself, has continued to loom large over the MCU.
Downey Jr. Post MCU
Although Downey Jr. is no longer appearing in the MCU, the storied actor has not hesitated about commenting on the events surrounding the property. The actor has previously defended the MCU against the likes of Quinten Tarintino, and congratulated fellow Marvel actors on their film success.
While Downey Jr. not shied away from his MCU past, the actor has remained adamant that he will likely not be returning to the franchise. Recently however, Downey did admit that there are things he misses about not being a part of the MCU.
Iron Man Speaks
In an interview with Deadline, Downey Jr. revealed that he misses “being in the trenches” with Marvel Studio president Kevin Feige, and went on talk about missing a lot of his co-workers. Here is the full quote:
“What I miss most? Being in the trenches with Kevin Feige throughout; the beginning, with Jon Favreau, it’s like a beautiful dream now; the middle, with Shane Black on Iron Man 3, we’d just had Exton and shot it mostly in Wilmington N.C. It was idyllic and subversive. And The End, when I realized I’d made so many close friends in the MCU cast, and the Russo Brothers helping me embrace Tony’s arc.”
So there you have it, Iron Man speaks. While the latest revelation may not be the groundbreaking announcement some fans were hoping for, its nice to hear the Downey Jr. has fond memories of his MCU past.
