REVIEW: Linzer and Gingerbread Cookies from Contemporary Holiday Bakery
The Holidays are in full swing at Disney’s Contemporary Resort! The atrium level has received its gingerbread display with a fitting 50th Anniversary theme, and the adjacent Holiday bakery is serving treats and drinks each and every day.
I visited the Resort during the gingerbread display’s opening week, and while I was snapping photos of the display, I couldn’t resist picking up a treat or two to try.
Contemporary Gingerbread Shingle
Did you know that each Disney Resort has its own bakery, and therefore has its own recipe for gingerbread? Each of the Disney Resorts’ gingerbread delicacies are unique, and for many years the Contemporary’s has been my personal favorite.
The gingerbread shingle here is gorgeous, with a 50th anniversary fondant decal and a generous dusting of luster dust to make it sparkle.
As always, the gingerbread was extremely soft and chewy, and the spices (nutmeg, cinnamon, and cloves) were extremely prominent. This is a spice-forward gingerbread that almost feels and tastes more like a dense gingerbread loaf than an overly sweet cookie.
Linzer Cookie
The Linzer cookie-complete with Mickey shaped cutout- was calling my name! This Linzer cookie was very fresh, had a generous coating of edge-to-edge raspberry jam…and hazelnuts?
As I was eating the cookie, I noticed very crunchy pieces that are not usually a part of a traditional Linzer cookie. Upon reading the nutrition info, I discovered that hazelnuts are a part of the cookie at the Contemporary. If you are someone with a nut allergy: be warned and make sure you always read ingredients- even if the item doesn’t traditionally contain nuts.
Overall, I both cookies were good, but both were untraditional. The gingerbread did not feature any frosting, and definitely had a spice-forward flavor that might put off someone with a less adventurous palate. The Linzer cookie was my favorite of the two this year, but I was really surprised by the hazelnuts.
They added a nice crunch for me once I figured out what they were, but if you are someone with a nut allergy, make sure you read the ingredients before buying!
