Strange World Fails to Entice Families To Theaters on Thanksgiving Weekend
Though historically families love heading to cinemas over the long Thanksgiving Weekend, the latest release from Walt Disney Animation Studios is failing to entice folks to the box office. According to a piece in Variety, Strange World only brought in $11.9 million from North American theaters over the weekend and $18.6 million over the extended holiday period.
For those unfamiliar, Strange World is Disney’s latest action-packed adventure. The film introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land. They are joined by a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures.
The film is directed by Don Hall (Big Hero 6 and Raya and the Last Dragon) and is co-directed by writer Qui Nguyen (Raya and the Last Dragon) and is produced by Ron Conli (Big Hero 6 and Tangled) this film will take audiences into a larger-than-life-adventure.
These are some pretty lackluster results especially for a Disney film. As Variety tells us, the film had a budget of $180 million meaning that it is currently posed to be a money loser for the company. Couple this with a CinemaScore of “B” which is low for Disney and a turnaround doesn’t seem likely. That means the film could lose at least $100 million for the company in its theatrical run.
However, its not all doom and gloom at the House of Mouse, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues to dominate at the box office for the third weekend in a row and actually landed ahead of Strange World in box office attendance over Thanksgiving weekend. According to Variety, the Marvel sequel brough in $45.9 million over the weekend bringing the domestic gross to $367 million.
Next up for Disney is the release of 21st Century Studios Avatar: The Way of Water which is due to arrive in theaters starting on December 16, 2022. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with Disney for more movie news and updates.
