Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Tops $600 Million Globally
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continued its reign atop the box office this Thanksgiving weekend, earning another $60 million.
The latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Wakanda Forever continues Marvel’s dominance with movie goers. With limited competition on the extended holiday weekend, the sequel to 2018’s Black Panther has now surpassed $320 million domestically and topped $600 million globally.
The question facing Wakanda Forever is whether the film will be able to reach the 1 billion dollar benchmark. While it appears unlikely that the film will be able to match its predecessor’s 1.3 billion dollar return, the film is expected outpace the previous MCU releases this year.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness fell just short of 1 billion mark, reaching $955 million worldwide. Thor: Love and Thunder meanwhile managed to bringing $760 million worldwide.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever takes viewers back to the recently-opened nation of Wakanda, as the royal family deals with the loss of King T’Challa. The film also introduces a new antagonist Namor, the king of Talokan, a civilization of underwater dwelling people.
A Disney Flop
While Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a bona-fide success, the box office news wasn’t all good for Disney. The studio’s most recent animated film, Strange World, flopped, earning $26 million dollars over the long weekend.
While expectations were lowered in recent weeks, mediocre critical reviews and a tepid response from audiences have hurt the film’s long term outlook.
With an estimated budget of $185 million dollars, it appears extremely unlikely that Disney will be able to recoup the film’s cost in theaters. In order to make the best of the situation, it appears as if Disney will hope the film picks up traction on Disney +.
