The Princess Diaries 3 Is Under Development!
Disney is heading back to Genovia for the Princess Diaries 3!
The new installment is the first in the series since 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. While a director has yet to be announced, the new film is being written by Aadrita Mukerji (“Reacher”. “Supergirl”).
What isn’t clear at this time, is if previous Princess Diaries’ stars Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews will be reprising their roles. We do know however, that the new film will be sequel to the original series and not a reboot.
Hathaway has previously expressed interest in returning to the Princess Diaries. The actress told Entertainment Tonight last month that she was “pulling” for another entry in the series, as long as Julie Andrews was involved.
The original Princess Diaries was an unexpected hit for Disney in 2001, when the film defied expectations to gross over $165 million dollars worldwide.
The movie tells the story of Mia Thermopolis, who is thrown for loop when she learns that she is a real life princess. Under the tutelage of her grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), Mia must decide if she will claim the throne or renounce her title.
The film would go on to launch Anne Hathaway’s to stardom and help to revitalize Andrews career.
As previously mentioned, a sequel titled The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
was released in 2004. Despite unfavorable critical reviews, the second installment in the series still managed to triple its production budget.
