Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Sets November Opening Record
Marvel has done it again. In spite of a growing concern about “superhero fatigue”, the studio’s newest entry in the MCU, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever set records this weekend with its $180 million dollar opening.
The sequel to 2019’s blockbuster Black Panther, Wakanda Forever set the November opening weekend record, on route to the second biggest opening of 2022.
At the international box office, the film also proved to be a winner.
Opening in 48 markets, Wakanda Forever saw returns of $150 million. That overseas opening gave the film a total opening weekend of $330 million.
This puts the film ahead of Thor: Love and Thunder (303.2M) and behind Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Magic (449.4M), which saw the biggest opening weekend of the year.
The $150 million dollar opening weekend also puts Black Panther: Wakanda Forever just behind the first Black Panther movie’s debut. That movie earned $159 million in international markets.
Looking at the individual markets, Wakanda Forever beat its predecessor in France, Mexico, and India, but saw big drop offs in the United Kingdom, Korea and Brazil.
The question now facing Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be whether or not the film can reach the exclusive one billion dollar club.
In the new films favor, Wakanda Forever has seen positive critical reviews and strong audience scores.
As of this writing, the film has an average Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes of 95%. Favorable word of mouth may be able to propel the movie over the one billion dollar finish line. Stay tuned!
