TikTok Informs Musical Element of Disney’s Live Action ‘Hercules’
Over the last few years, there’s been a focus on reimagining animated classics. According to producers, TikTok will inform the musical element of Disney’s live action Hercules.
Disney’s Live Action Hercules
In 2020, The Hollywood Reporter announced that a live action remake was in the works for the beloved Disney movie, Hercules. The original, animated version was released back in 1997.
Since the announcement, Disney fans have heard bits and pieces about what they can expect from the adaptation. The film’s producers, Joe and Anthony Russo aim to honor the classic version while putting a modern spin on it.
Reportedly, it will not be a literal retelling of its predecessor. Rather, it will hearken back to a few elements of the film.
This year, news broke that Guy Ritchie had been chosen as director of the movie. Ritchie has an understanding of live action remakes, after working on Aladdin, released in 2019, starring Will Smith.
In a recent interview, the Russo brothers revealed that the film will be a musical. Speaking to Variety, Joe stated, “There are questions about how you translate it as a musical.”

He added, “Audiences today have been trained by TikTok, right? What is their expectation of what that musical looks like and feels like? That can be a lot of fun and help us push the boundaries a little bit on how you execute a modern musical.”
Disney’s live action remakes have received their share of criticism over the years. Some feel that the stories are exact replicas of the classic movies we all know and love, making them less interesting.
Joe insists this won’t be the case with their Hercules adaptation. He confirms it will be “a little bit more experimental in tone, a little bit more experimental in execution”.
Ritchie is adding his own personal touches to the screenplay, which makes sense since he’s known for experimentation in films. In reference to collaborating with Disney, the Russos share, “We have an amazing relationship with them that we’ve built over a decade.”
He goes on to say, “I think we have a point of view on how they can stretch the limits of their IP moving forward, rather than playing IP management.” This is good news for fans hoping for a little something different this time around.
