Abigail Disney Shuts Down Fork Films
The granddaughter of Roy O. Disney, Walt Disney’s older brother, is making headlines today. Abigail Disney has shut down Fork Films, a film and television production company she founded with Gini Reticker in 2007.
Fork Films
Fork Films was known for producing documentary films focused on social issues. Its official website states, “We produce and support change-driven nonfiction media, often with women at the center. Our work shifts perspectives and brings communities together with stirring powerfully human stories.”
Recently, the production company backed the documentary, The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in September 2022.
The movie’s official website reads, “Abigail Disney looks at America’s dysfunctional and unequal economy and asks why the American Dream has worked for the wealthy, yet is a nightmare for people born with less.”
Disney draws from her family’s story in the controversial piece. Variety reports that less than 10 people have been laid off as a result of Fork Films’ closure.
The staff was prepared for the news, having been notified of Disney’s plans in February. Since then, they have been working together to gradually close the company’s doors.

A spokesperson for Fork Films explained, “After much reflection, Abigail decided to close Fork Films. Several Fork Films’ staff members will continue working on ‘The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales,’ its release and impact campaign in the coming months.”
The spokesperson also shared that Abigail Disney “plans to continue making films.” In addition to Fork Films, Disney co-founded Level Forward.
A film and theater company, their goal is to provide support for female artists. Disney has not been shy about voicing her feelings for her family’s Walt Disney Company over the years.
In the past, she’s stated that CEOs are “paid far too much” and that “there is nobody on Earth worth 500 times his median workers’ pay.” Disney is married with four children and lives in New York City.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens next for this vocal Disney family member after her decision to shut down Fork Films.
