Figment, Mickey, Minnie Celebrate EPCOT’s 40th
Forty years ago today, EPCOT opened its gates to guests, bringing Walt Disney’s vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow to life. Today, the innovative theme park kicked off it’s anniversary celebration with three Walt Disney World icons on full display: Mickey and Minnie Mouse and EPCOT’s beloved Figment.
In Creations Shop, the park’s merchandise epicenter, an actual Figment model from the original Journey into Imagination attraction often sits in a window. A couple of weeks though, he disappeared.
Luckily, he returned today to his honorary location clad in his very own throwback “EPCOT 40” turtleneck sweater. It really wouldn’t be a celebration of EPCOT without him.
The detailing in the top takes a futuristic approach to loungewear, which seems fitting for the reinvention of the theme park. Over the past few years, EPCOT pursued an extensive remodel that will feature at least two new attractions with Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind (opened May 2022) and Journey of Water – Inspired by Moana (opening next year).
Mickey and Minnie Join Anniversary Festivities
Mickey and Minnie Mouse also popped up today behind the front check-out counters inside Creations Shop. Covered in nostalgic ensemble dominated by a metallic silver color, the pair perfectly capture World Discovery’s emphasis on space exploration.
The rainbow-shaped details on their ensembles tie into the colors of EPCOT’s signature emblems, a vintage set of symbology that debuted at the park 40 years ago. The same shades pop on Minnie’s darling oversized bow.
The Art Deco signage behind the penultimate pair ties in similar shades as well as the park’s iconic font, which also made its way back to EPCOT during the redesign.
“Celebrating 40 years of imagination” reminds Creations Shop guests of the park’s mission set by Walt Disney himself long ago.
Happy anniversary, EPCOT! Assuredly, MickeyBlog cannot wait to continue celebrating with you (and our favorite “lovable fellow“) today.
