What Will The Weather Be Like In Orlando? Experts Say Expect Charley-like Storms But Not As Extreme
For those of you following along with MickeyBlog that are currently in or around the Walt Disney World area, you may be wondering what the whether will be like for central Florida. The Orlando Sentinel did a fantastic job of highlighting what those in Central Florida might experience as Hurricane Ian makes landfall.
Kevin Guthrie, state emergency management chief in Florida suspected that the impact of Hurricane Ian will be similar to Charley (2004) but without some of the more extreme weather conditions. Comparing Ian with notorious storm Charley, Guthrie added, “One of the things that’s a little different with Charley [is that forecasts show] it may go through Central Florida at a less intensity than Charley.”
If you’ve been following along with us here at MickeyBlog, you may have seen our earlier article that Ian is currently a Category 4 hurricane with winds inching ever closer to Category 5. It is expected to reach landfall in Florida a bit later this afternoon. Current projections have the Hurricane traveling across Central Florida in a beeline toward the Atlantic Coast.
For those familiar with Charley, you’ll know that it charted a similar path across the state. Charley made landfall on the Gulf Coast and moved across the state as a Category 1. But Guthrie re-iterates that winds aren’t expected to be as high as Charley, “The big difference is it will have less intensity once it hits Central Florida. … It shouldn’t be nearly as catastrophic on the winds as Charley,” Guthrie said.
So what was the impact of Charley on Central Florida? According to reports, the strength of the winds downed trees in the area and resulted in power outages. Those in Orlando should exercise caution and wind gusts of up to 90 mphs could be hitting the area by tomorrow morning.
For those just catching up on the news, here is a Tampa Bay weather report from 8 am this morning.
