Early Reactions are In For Hocus Pocus 2 and It’s a Scream!
Hocus Pocus 2, the long-anticipated sequel to the 1993 film about a trio of witchy sisters reeking havoc on Salem during Halloween is coming out this week and reviews are starting to come in! Though the bar was high for a sequel, initial feedback suggests that critics approve of the Disney+ film which comes out on September 30th.
For those unfamiliar, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy have come together once more for the sequel. It has been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the sisters. They’re back and looking for revenge. Now, it is up to three high school students to once again stop the witches from wreaking havoc on Salem.
Also starring in the film are Doug Jones (“The Shape of Water”), Whitney Peak (“Gossip Girl”), Lilia Buckingham (“Dirt”), Belisa Escobedo (“American Horror Stories”), Hannah Waddingham (“Ted Lasso”), Tony Hale (“Veep”), Sam Richardson (“The Tomorrow War,” “Good Boys”), Juju Brener (“Vanquish”), Froy Gutierrez (“Teen Wolf”), Taylor Paige Henderson and Nina Kitchen. The film is directed by Anne Fletcher (“Dumplin,’” “The Proposal”), written by Jen D’Angelo (“Happy Together,” “Workaholics”) and produced by Lynn Harris (“King Richard,” “The Shallows”), with Adam Shankman (“Disenchanted,” “Hairspray”), Ralph Winter (“Hocus Pocus,” “X-Men” franchise) and David Kirschner (“Hocus Pocus,” “Chucky”) serving as executive producers.
As a recent piece in ScreenRant reminds us, the original film received poor reviews and was considered (at the time) to be a box office flop. However, Hocus Pocus developed a cult following over the years. Some early reactions are in for the sequel and it’s look pretty positive. The film is praised for recapturing the kooky magic of the original.

A promise is a promise: I can now say that #HocusPocus2 is absolutely worth the wait. The Sanderson Sisters’ return is a bit lighter in tone, but no less fun than the first. Director Anne Fletcher’s sequel refuses to just play the hits, bringing fresh fun and laughs to the table. pic.twitter.com/8tuQ6Wey6A

The Sanderson Sisters are back! #HocusPocus2 is filled with huge laughs and endless entertainment. Midler, Parker and Najimy don’t miss a beat reprising their roles from 29 years ago and it’s spellbinding seeing them together again. @HocusPocusMovie @DisneyPlus pic.twitter.com/SJ1BNYrdks
