Steve Martin, Disney Legend, Announces Retirement (Maybe)
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Legend, Steve Martin, might have just announced his retirement.
To say Steve Martin has had a stellar, award winning career is an understatement. From Emmy and Grammy awards to starring in “Father Bride” and hosting “Saturday Night Live” several times, to everything else in between, Steve has had a career only one can dream of.
But, did you know where Steve Martin got his start? None other than Disneyland!
Steve Martin’s first job at Disneyland was selling guidebooks at the entrance gates. From there he moved on up to spinning lassos in Froniterland.
He didn’t stop there though! He eventually held a job at the old Merlin’s Magic Shop in Fantasyland for three years entertaining Guests with magic tricks and jokes.
“I knew every nook and cranny of the shop,” he told D23.com.
During his time at Merlin’s Magic Shop, he watched other Cast Members, including Christopher Fair who was the Park’s court jester, and Wally Boag, who was the Golden Horseshoe headliner, closely. These two both actually had an influence over Steve’s performances and career over the years.
“I watched Wally’s show many, many times. He was the first live performer I ever saw. I mostly remember Wally’s performing style,” Steve said.
He went on to say, “It was fresh, sassy, and very clean. Watching his comic timing was a very big influence on my own career.”
But, after a lifelong career of making others laugh and smile, Steve Martin just told The Hollywood Reporter that the current project he is working on, “Only Murders in the Building”, which he costars along with Martin Short and Selena Gomez on Hulu, will be most likely be his last.
He said, “When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.”
While that might come as a disappointment to several, there is still a glimmer of hope that we might see Steve on our screens once again.
“My wife keeps saying, ‘You always say you’re going to retire and then you always come up with something’…I’m really not interested in retiring. I’m not. But I would just work a little less. Maybe.”
If this does happen to be the final curtain call for Steve, I would be we might be able to spot him back at his first employer, Disneyland. Maybe spotting him isn’t the right word though…
Steve also told D23.com about a recent visit to his favorite Disney Parks. He said, “Recently I went back in disguise. I dyed my hair brown and wore a brown mustache. It’s not that people mob me on the streets; but Disneyland can be very tough, and I don’t like being stared and yelled at.”
I get it, Steve!
Whatever you decide to do Steve Martin, we thank you for the years of memories and making us laugh! Best wishes!
