Disney Surpasses Netflix To Become World’s Top Streaming Company
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog today then you’ll know that it was the Q3 Earnings Report for The Walt Disney Company. It was good news for Disney and investors as the company saw both an uptick and Disney+ subscribers as well as theme park profitability. One definite talking point that defined the call was the fact that Disney’s total streaming subscriber count comes in at 221 million which is more than Netflix’s 220.7 million.
The subscriber figures were current as of July 2022. Breaking it down, Disney+ has 152.1 million, Hulu 46.2 million and ESPN+ 22.8 million. Disney added 14.4 million subscribers during the company’s third fiscal quarter. Hulu and ESPN added 600,000 subscribers combined.
This announcement comes hot-on-the-heels of Disney’s news that they will be launching a cheaper ad-supported subscription option for Disney+. As we previously reported the subscription will be called Disney+ Basic and will launch (with ads) starting on December 8th. It will cost $7.99 a month. Disney+ is increasing their regular subscription (which will be rebranded Disney+ Premium) to $10.99.
“We had an excellent quarter, with our world-class creative and business teams powering outstanding performance at our domestic theme parks, big increases in live-sports viewership, and significant subscriber growth at our streaming services. With 14.4 million Disney+ subscribers added in the fiscal
third quarter, we now have 221 million total subscriptions across our streaming offerings,” said Bob Chapek, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “We continue to transform entertainment as we near our second century, with compelling new storytelling across our many platforms and unique immersive physical experiences that exceed guest expectations, all of which are reflected in our strong operating results this quarter.”
