Do You Know What Mickey Mouse’s First Words Were?
We thought we’d end the weekend with a fun bit of Disney trivia that you can use to dazzle your friends. Do you know what Mickey Mouse’s first words were and where they were spoken?
Not, knowing the answer to this, I, like most of you guessed Steamboat Willie. We’ve all seen that clip at the beginning of Disney films of Mickey whistling away at the helm of a ship.
However, that answer is incorrect. Steamboat Willie was Mickey’s first big-screen appearance but Mickey didn’t actually speak in the film!
The speaking part actually didn’t occur until a year later in 1929’s The Karnival Kid. Though Mickey laughed, screamed and cried in other projects his first actual words appear in this film.
For those unfamiliar, The Karnival Kid is broken into two segments. The first segment (where Mickey speaks for the first time) features Mickey selling hot dogs at the carnival. The short starts with Mickey in the middle of a bustling carnival where he is selling hotdogs and antagonizing Kat Nipp who is a traditional carnival barker.
In the scene, Mickey shouts “Hotdogs! Hotdogs!” So there you have it. Hotdog is Mickey Mouse’s first word.
This moment is made even more lovely by the fact that it was actually Walt Disney who was the voice of Mickey when he made his first words in the film.
You can check out the short below:
This leads to a fun secondary bit of trivia. Now that we know what Mickey’s first words are, get ready for a lightbulb moment when listening to this Mickey Mouse Clubhouse song!
Isn’t that fantastic! It’s all tied together in the Disney-verse and sometimes the answers are right in front of us!
