Emmy-Winner David Warner Passes Away at 80
British actor David Warner pass away yesterday, just a few days shy of is 81st birthday.
You might not know Warner’s name, but you will likely recognize his face. The actor has 228 acting credits to his name since the early 1960s, not including a host of voice work in animated series and video games.
Often cast as the villain, thanks to a deep voice and signature seriousness, Warner was well known for his multiple roles in the original Tron as businessman Ed Dillinger, second-in-line Sark, and rogue computer software voice, the Master Control Program. He is often remembered as sinister sidekick Spicer Lovejoy in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic, or as Chancellor Gorkon or St. John Talbot in the Star Trek franchise. Sci-fi fans will also recognize him from Time after Time, The Omen, Time Bandits, Planet of the Apes, Babylon 5, Doctor Who and even more.
Warner lent his voice to many animated productions and video games over the years. In the Disney-verse, he narrated several Winnie the Pooh productions, including short films and a video game in the late 1990s. He also voiced Lord Angstrom in the short-lived “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command” TV series.
Warner’s final on-screen credit was as the intrepid Admiral Boom in 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.
With a career spanning 50 years, David Warner worked alongside many great actors and directors, some of whom have paid their respects.
Lin-Manuel Miranda noted the actor’s “incredible versatility”.
Bruce Boxleitner, Warner’s co-star in Tron and Babylon 5 was both a fan and eventually a friend. The actor noted that the will miss Warner’s dry wit.
Writer/Director Edgar Wright noted the actor’s “huge legacy on stage & screen” and several “unforgettable roles”.
Everyone agrees, the legendary actor will be missed.
