Thor Hammers the Competition at Weekend Box Office
Despite not being as much of a hit with the critics as other Marvel films, Thor: Love and Thunder is still having a divine run at the box office delivering another $100M+ opening for Disney/Marvel. The overall weekend ticket sales for the film are estimated to be around $244 million.
Let’s break down those figures a week bit shall we!? Thor: Love and Thunder had a $69.5 million opening on Friday (which included $29 million in previews) according to DEADLINE. Weekend estimates have the film pulling in $135 – $145 million This puts the film on target to be the third-best domestic opening of 2022 behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($187.4 Million) and Jurassic World Dominion ($145 million.)
The only thing that could put a damper on Thor’s momentum is lower-than-usual reviews from critics and audiences. The film currently has a 68% on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore. According to Comscore/Screen Engine PostTTrack results for general audiences, the film has about a 77% positive which puts it close to the 75% that was earned by the Eternals.
So why the slightly lower scores? Some chalk it up to Marvel burnout or the fact that director Taika Waititi’s humor may not be everyone’s cup of tea. According to DEADLINE, social media analytic group RelishMix had this to say about Thor: Love and Thunder‘s opening, “Energy levels and tone run wildly mixed, leaning positive — as Thor chatter has returned to pre-pandemic cynicism, playfulness, and criticism from the MCU. Some wonder if this is a comedy, while others explain that this project swings from superhero to Taika Waititi-land improv playfulness. Other threads question if Chris Hemsworth is being overshadowed alone with adoration of the role, love for Christian Bale, and talk about Natalie Portman’s gender-bending role.”
