Disney Headlines for June 8th, 2022
This week, a Disneyland Paris cast member makes an unforced error, Disney makes a lovely gesture, and an uncomfortable Johnny Depp debate begins.
We’ve got a weird week in Disney Headlines.
No. Just No.
By now, you’ve likely seen this viral video:

No, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Yes, a couple was in the middle of an engagement, and she was ready to accept his marriage proposal.
Suddenly, a cold-hearted Disney cast member decided that the ceremony shouldn’t occur on that stage.
The non-apologetic worker shrugged off boos from the crowd and a puzzled look from the would-be happy couple.
Something important to note here is that the man doing the proposing had previously asked for permission to do it there.
A different Disney cast member, one with a heart not made of stone, happily consented to this lovely gesture.
Nobody’s quite sure why the Disney worker acted so obnoxiously in interrupting this couple’s moment of a lifetime.
The man who got interrupted has indicated that he knows this cast member. So, maybe there’s some history there?
Whatever the explanation, the video tells a story that makes a Disney employee look like a total jerk, which is hard to do.
Cast members are as close to angels as you’ll ever meet on Earth. And Disney is sensitive to any criticisms regarding their behavior.
For this reason, Disney issued a sincere apology: “We regret how this was handled. We have apologized to the couple involved and offered to make it right.”
In other words, Disney knows that this maneuver was indefensible and isn’t going to expend any effort supporting the cast member who is totally in the wrong.
I won’t link to the original Reddit post by the couple involved since the subreddit includes foul language.
However, I think it’s telling that this post maxed out karma, which is extremely rare on Reddit.
The public sided squarely against the cast member here.
A Lovely Gesture
Sometimes, we learn of something that happens, and we honestly cannot think of anything to do to help.
I’ll relay a personal anecdote here as an example. When I first learned that my father was undergoing radiation treatments, I couldn’t be with him at the time.
Living in a different city, I felt guilty about my inability to support him. So the best idea I could come up with – and it wasn’t a great one – involved Dairy Queen.
The man loved his Blizzards. So, I went to the store and bought 25 of them, one for each of his treatments.
I told him to eat one after he felt better each time so that he’d know I was thinking of him.
If anything, those desserts probably made him more nauseous each time. But it was all I could think to do.
I thought about this as I read about a lovely gesture that Disney performed this past week.
Warning: if you’re sensitive about the deaths of children, you should read to the next section.
Friends, we’re all acutely aware of the tragedy in Uvalde, Texas, that claimed the lives of 19 children.
I won’t name names, but one of the parents mentioned during an interview how much her late daughter had loved the movie Encanto.
The lovely people working for the Walt Disney Costume Team saw these reports during national news broadcasts.
They didn’t know what else they could do in such a tragic situation. Still, they understood the power of Disney in the lives of families.
So, the Disney employees worked on a unique dress for the family. It’s a one-of-a-kind recreation of Isabella’s outfit in Encanto.
Nobody ever knows for sure how people will react to such gestures, but the family loved it. You can read more here.
An Uncomfortable Discussion about Johnny Depp
The next five seconds that I watch of the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard competing lawsuits will be the first.
I had no interest in this race to the bottom, as I’ve sat at a dinner table and watched exes scream at each other. It’s uncomfortable, and I actively avoid such situations.
However, I track SEO as part of my career, and I’m well aware of how many people paid attention to this trial. The numbers speak for themselves.
Thanks to their tireless coverage of all the drama and legalese, Twitch and YouTube accounts went from virtually no followers to hundreds of thousands.
The attention that came from this lawsuit has done something unexpected. Somehow, it has led some Hollywood executives to view Johnny Depp as viable again.
I can tell you that this hasn’t been the case for a long time. In fact, Warner Bros. infamously fired Depp from Fantastic Beasts 3 after he’d already filmed a scene.
At least one former Disney executive believes that the tide has turned on Depp’s previous cancellation.
The unsourced, unnamed individual told People that Depp, the former number one box office draw in the world, could return to his signature role.
Here’s the quote:
“I absolutely believe post-verdict that Pirates is primed for rebooting with Johnny as Capt. Jack back on board.
There is just too much potential box-office treasure for a beloved character deeply embedded in the Disney culture.”
I consider this assessment quite generous, as I believe Depp’s recent personal history doesn’t fit well with Disney’s desired profile.
Still, that’s an interesting story to track in the coming months. Have we not seen the last of Depp and Captain Jack Sparrow?
Apropos of Nothing…
