Everything You Need to Know About the Official Start to the 2022 Hurricane Season
This time of the year is always exciting with the end of school and start of the Summer season. But, with tomorrow being June 1, it also means the official start to the 2022 hurricane season.
Hurricane Predictions for 2022
Forecasters are predicting an above average, active hurricane season for 2022 that could be similar to the number and severity of storms we have seen the past few years.
For 2022, it’s likely that anywhere from 16 to 20 named storms will develop with six to eight of those storms reaching hurricane status. Of those, three to five may be major hurricanes and four to six might have a direct impact on the United States. (A major hurricane is classified as one that is a category 3 to 5 and has winds starting at 111 mph.)
For the 2021 season, we say 21 named storms with seven of those reaching hurricane status. Of those seven hurricanes, four of them were classified as major and eight storms total impacted the United States.
The average number of named storms that develop every year is 14 with seven of those becoming hurricanes. Three of those seven hurricanes usually become major and around 3.5 storms impact the United States each year. So, as you can see, this year’s predictions put us above the average mark.

Differences Between Watches and Hurricanes
Growing up in South Florida, I consider myself somewhat of a hurricane pro. And, if one of the questions you always have is what is the difference between a storm watch or warning, I’m here to help!
A watch is issued when the conditions of a tropical storm or hurricane impacting your area in about 48 hours. During a watch, you are “watching” for what the weather will do and you should start implementing your safety plans.
A warning is issued when storm force winds are expected in your area within 36 hours or less and a storm has a very good chance of impacting your area.
Hurricanes and Your Walt Disney World Vacation
While hurricane strength winds don’t typically reach Orlando and the Walt Disney World Resort, tropical storm force winds are possible in the area when a storm is impacting the state of Florida. Also, anything is possible so it is better to be prepared!
While you might not experience hurricane strength winds at Walt Disney World, an impending storm has known to shut down the theme parks in the past. Disney does have policies and protocols in place for impending storms to keep all their Guests and Cast Members safe.

Pro Tip: While you might be able to change your dates and/or get a refund from Disney if your vacation is impacted by a hurricane or tropical storm, be prepared for LONG hold times! But, not when you use a Travel Agent like myself to make your reservations for you as part of my job is to wait on hold for you!
Make sure to keep it here with MickeyBlog.com as we will continue to monitor the 2022 hurricane season and cross our fingers there are no storms that we will have to report on!
