Director of ‘Jedi: Fallen Order’ Speaks on Sequel ‘Jedi: Survivor’
Star Wars Celebration Day was full of amazing surprises! One of them was the announcing of the name for the sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order, which will be titled Jedi: Survivor!
Director Stig Asmussen, who directed the original video game will be returning to direct Jedi: Survivor and was interviewed by StarWars.com to talk about the immense success of the first game and how the teaser for the sequel might allude to the mood of the next game.
Jedi: Fallen Order follows the story of rogue Jedi Padawan Cal Kestis as he is on the run following the ramifications of Order 66 and the hunting of the Jedi. Cal and his trusty companion BD-1 must evade capture from the malicious inquisitors who seek to exterminate the Jedi.
During his journey, Cal must hunt down a Jedi Holocron with hopes of restarting the now-defunct Jedi Order.
Success Among The Star Wars Faithful
One of the first questions asked by StarWars.com is the incredible fan reaction that followed the release of Jedi: Fallen Order. Asmussen spoke of the “validation” that his team received after the generally positive reviews followed, noting that Star Wars fans “Always Expect the Best”.
Indeed, Jedi: Fallen Order wasn’t only popular among the fans who played it, but also had a great deal of critical success. The game was generally viewed as a positive experience by critics, while also winning and being nominated for various video game awards.
Creating a Hero in Cal Kestis
One of the most profound elements found within Jedi: Fallen Order was that of lead protagonist Cal Kestis. In the interview, Asmussen speaks on Cal’s journey from being a lonely Padawan to forging himself into a Jedi.
Asmussen mentions that as you progressed through the game, you not only were able to gather “new mechanics” as Cal acquired new Force abilities but also watched Cal grow into the Jedi hero, with players “feeling like you were in the journey with Cal.”
Looking Ahead to Jedi: Survivor
Jedi: Survivor will only be released on next-gen consoles, and as such will feature many gameplay enhancements. Asmussen mentions the addition of “ray tracing, or lighting. That’s allowing us to do real-time lighting, all the time”.
Additionally, Asmussen notes next-gen models have “blazing fast drives on these consoles” allowing for an easier time in loading content, with many games not even needing the age-old loading screens that gamers have become familiar with.
The teaser trailer released on Star Wars Celebration Day was full of interesting elements but had an overall ghastly and dark mood. Asmussen mentions that the sequel will focus on survival, hence the name Jed: Survivor.
The director further spoke on the overall tone and feel of the next film, ominously speaking about the characters in the sequel Asmussen stated:
“They are in dark times, and Cal and the crew are doing whatever it takes to stay alive. That might mean that they are making connections with people that, in other times, might be considered unsavory”
From Asmussen’s cryptic words, we can assume that the overall tone of the sequel will certainly be much darker. As we have seen in Kenobi on Disney+, the Jedi are desperate to survive by any means necessary as the hunting continues, often betraying the ideals they fought for.
The follow-up to Jedi: Fallen Order seems certain to continue the glimpse into the post-Revenge of The Sith era, and we wonder how Cal Kestis will be able to keep his Jedi values when many of his compatriots have fallen away.
Jedi: Survivor is set to release in 2023 picking up on Cal’s journey from the end of Jedi: Fallen Order. How Cal and BD-1 will survive and proceed through their journey is sure to be another amazing tale.
We cannot wait to get our hands on the sequel when it arrives in 2023.
