BREAKING NEWS: State of Florida Will Likely Take Over Control of Reedy Creek
It looks like the state of Florida will be taking over control of Disney World’s Reedy Creek Improvement District rather than local government according to a recent statement made by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
According to a recent piece in the Orlando Sentinel, DeSantis advised that he is drafting a proposal that will be ready in time for the November elections.
If you’ve been following along with MickeyBlog then you’ll know that Reedy Creek, which encompasses Disney World and neighboring properties, is set to dissolve on June 1, 2023. The government hasn’t released specific details regarding the transition but this is a story that we’ll continue to monitor closely and we promise to keep you posted.
Contrary to reports, DeSantis, is saying that local taxpayers will not be hit with additional taxes due to the dissolution of Reedy Creek.
In his statement DeSantis said, “The path forward is, Disney will not control its own government in the state of Florida.” He continued, “Disney will have to follow the same laws that every other company has to follow in the state of Florida. They will pay their share of taxes, and they will be responsible for paying the debts.”
According to the piece in the Sentinel, we know that DeSantis wants to put the state in charge of the district to ensure that Disney will continue to pay the taxes needed to maintain facilities. He offered that this could even include a wage increase for Reedy Creek first responders.

The dissolution of Reedy Creek Improvement District comes after Disney’s vocal opposition to the Parental Rights in Education Bill.
Under the current system, Reedy Creek is controlled by Disney allowing them to oversee land use, environmental protection and manage public service. Reedy Creek is currently overseen by a five-member Board of Supervisors. It is assumed that a state run district would have a board picked by Gov. DeSantis.
