At theaters this weekend it was all about Multiverse of Madness. The Doctor Strange sequel earned a mighty $185 million at the North American box office this weekend. This is further confirmation that the popularity of the Disney/Marvel juggernaut shows no signs of slowing.
To put the opening in perspective, Black Widow earned $80 million at debut and an additional $60 million on Disney+), Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings which earned $75 million at opening and Eternals which pulled in $71 million.
If you were following along with MickeyBlog last week, you’ll know that initial box office receipts for Doctor Strange puts it at the 11th biggest opening weekend in history. That being said, it also delivered the biggest opening weekend of 2022 beating out The Batman which earned $134 million on opening weekend. Spider-Man: No Way Home still ranks as the biggest opening weekend since COVID-19 earning $260 million.
Overseas, Doctor Strange earned $265 million over 49 territories for a global total of $450 million. The film is unlikely to play in China, Russia or Ukraine so its unclear as of yet as to whether it will join Spider-Man in the billion dollar club.
According to a recent piece in Variety, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has outgrossed the original film during opening weekend. As Variety highlights, the film brought in $90 million on Friday alone while the original film back in 2016 brought in $85 million.
Sam Raimi, the mastermind behind the original Spider-Man trilogy returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Joining Cumberbatch, the cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, a teen who can travel between dimensions.
Though the film managed to pack in audiences, reviews of the film where a bit more lukewarm compared to other Marvel releases. The title currently has a 75% average on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ CinemaScore.
