The Disney Food Journey from the Fork and Beyond
Surely, we can only imagine how much food people throw away at Disney Parks. So, let’s take a closer look at the Disney food journey, beyond the trash can.
Our efforts to reduce food waste have provided more than 2 million meals to our communities over the past two years. π± Learn about the journey from farm, to fork, to food bank and beyond: https://t.co/cW4b0TzJRj #DisneyPlanetPossible pic.twitter.com/G1sMFQG7CO

As part of Disney Planet Possible, uneaten Disney food goes past its limits. Chef Michael Gonsalves explains, “Across Disney Parks, we are committed to reducing food waste with a goal of zero waste to landfill. To aid in this effort, we try to maximize food waste diversion. Pushing the bar on food quality and innovation is one thing, but most important is the consideration of our carbon footprint and its impacts on our world. The vision and dedication to drive to sustainable zero-waste models should be the goal for everyone on this planet if we plan to see it thrive for generations to come.β
Truly, the process begins with menu planning to determine the number of meals served in Disney Parks each day. Therefore, food waste prevention begins at the very start. Fun fact…did you know know that Walt Disney World produces much of the food on the property, such as at EPCOT’s The Land pavilion?
So, what happens to the scraps left in the waste bins? Turns out, Disney Parks use it in a variety of ways.
Plants and Animals
Walt Disney World Resort sends food waste to an off-site composting facility. Here, it is naturally broken down and recycled into a nutrient-rich soil product. Finally, individuals use the food for gardening, farming, landscaping, and more.
Also, Disneyland Resort converts uneaten food into an amendment that helps feed farm animals.
Energy
Interestingly enough, Disneyland resort turns used cooking oil from the restaurants into biodiesel. That biodiesel runs the steam trains and the Mark Twain Riverboat. Therefore, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency awarded Disneyland Resort the “Food Recovery Challenge Award” and the “SEAL Business Sustainability Award” for managing food waste.
In addition, Hong Kong Disneyland sent 360 tons of food waste to the government’s anaerobic digestion facility in 2021. Therefore, they converted food scraps into energy and diverted landfills.
Disneyland Paris transforms 93% of its food waste into energy through biomethanization. The process produces 745 MWh of energy, consumed by 229 families.
Together, We Can
Through the full-circle Disney food journey, Disney uses every ounce of food in some form or fashion. Truly, Disney Planet Possible changes Earth’s story with each meal.
