Disney/Pixar’s A Bug’s Life Teaches Us About Insects
Disney/Pixar’s A Bug’s Life is a charming tale that has us cheering for insects. The film is about a colony of ants and their struggles to survive against a grasshopper bully gang.
Mandatory Food Offering
Each year, the ants provide a food offering to the grasshoppers, so they may remain in peace without the gang’s infiltration. However, Flik (the main lead ant) accidentally causes the food to tumble away, leaving the grasshoppers with nothing.
The grasshopper leader, named Hopper, invades the underground ant sanctuary and demands his food offering. However, Princess Atta attempts to explain the situation, but she is not the queen.
Hopper tells Princess Atta that she doesn’t “smell” like the queen. Then, Hopper uses his feelers to touch Princess Atta’s face.
Scientifically Sound
Scientists proved that insects use their antennae to smell, so this is a very accurate scene. North Carolina State University’s Entomology program says that antennae are sensory organs used to “detect odor molecules in the air” as well as to detect the amount of humidity in the air.
However, mosquitoes also use their feelers to hear. In addition, some flies’ antennae determine their speed of flight.

A Bugs Life was released in 1998. After its release, Entertainment Weekly spoke with a curatorial assistant at Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology about how well Disney pulled off those important details.
Disney/Pixar’s A Bug’s Life also accurately portrayed the insects’ lack of noses since insects don’t have them or lungs. Instead, they breathe through holes in their abdomens while using their antennae to smell.
So, the next time you sit down to watch “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, look for even more tiny details that teach you even more about those pesky insects. After all, bugs surround us each day.
