Disney’s Zootopia Signals Little Rodentia Behavior
Disney’s Zootopia features a place where animals have no intention of harming each other. Here, Judy Hopps dreams of being the first bunny cop. After her dreams come true, she and a cynical con artist fox (Nick Wilde) must uncover a conspiracy in Zootopia.
Scattering Rodents
In Zootopia, you see a sign for “Thigmo-Taxis” in Little Rodentia. So, let’s take a moment and go back to the film. Imagine the scene when Officer Judy Hopps chases a weasel who stole a duffel bag from the flower shop in Zootopia.
The weasel runs into Little Rodentia, a neighborhood in Zooptopia. Here, Officer Hopps navigates small streets and buildings while avoiding the scattering rodent citizens. This is when you see the “Thigmo-Taxis” sign.
Zootopia Pun
So, Thigmo-Taxis is a pun on a term. Thigmotaxis describes the way a living organism moves in response to a physical stimulus. The definition says, “movement of an organism toward or away from any object that provides a mechanical stimulus.”
The thigmotaxis pun occurs in Little Rodentia because thigmotaxis describes physical behavior and anxiety in mice. Just imagine how mice and other rodents react when something touches it, and you can watch them scurry all over the place as Officer Hopps comes through their neighborhood.
I Saw the Sign
So, have you ever noticed this subtle detail in Disney’s Zootopia? If not, look for the “Thigmo-Taxis” sign the next time you watch the film.
