The statemetn, which seems to be in part a response to the “Don’t Say Gay” legislation which is dividing Floridians and the nation. The statement starts by echoing Walt’s statement, “To ALL who come to this happy place, welcome.” It goes on to say, “Disney Parks, Experiences and Products is committed to creating experiences that support family values for every family and will not stand for discrimination in any form.”
In what seems to be a direct reference to the Florida bill, the statement continues, “We oppose any legislation that infringes on basic human rights, and stand in solidarity and support for our LGBTQIA+ cast, crew, Imagineers and fans who make their voices heard today and every day.
The Walt Disney Company and namely its CEO Bob Chapek recently came under fire for not being more vocal in their opposition to policies being passed in Florida. Though Chapek did eventually address his concerns regarding the new legislation directly with Gov. Ron Desantis, many felt that it was to little to late.
Today, employees across the Walt Disney Company are staging a walkout dubbed “Disney Do Better.” According to a recent piece in The Orlando Sentinel, the walkout is designed to be staged during employees’ 15-minute breaks and addresses what many feel is Disney’s lack of vocal supporter for the LGBTQIA+ community and cast member rights, particularly in light of the situation in Florida.
Below is a short clip of a walkout being staged in California by CNBC.
