New “Turning Red” Pin Bursts Onto EPCOT Scene
Anyone who pin trades at Walt Disney World Resort knows that a stop at Pin Traders underneath Spaceship Earth at EPCOT is a must. Today on a little pop into the popular collectible shop, we spotted a fabulously animated new option celebrating Pixar’s “Turning Red.”
With main character Mei taking on her red panda form, the pin celebrate the daring fun that the quarter of friends have throughout the coming-of-age film. Mei’s besties Priya, Miriam, and Abby join along for what appears to be quite a ride through some event of their adolescence.
“Turning Red” Follows Mei’s Emotional Journey
Released just over a week ago by Pixar Animation Studios directly to Disney+, “Turning Red” follows Meilin, or “Mei,” as her friends call her. A thirteen-year-old Chinese-Canadian, Mei along with her peer group attempt to grapple with the challenges of their early teen years together. However, Mei discoveres that her family has hid quite a secret from her throughout her life thus far.
“Mei’s ancestors share a mystical connection with the red panda species, and one morning she discovers what this truly means when she wakes up from a nightmare to find that she has transformed into a giant red panda. Mei’s parents are aware that this change is set to arrive, but they react very differently. Luckily, Mei’s friend group embraces her special power, loving her no matter what,” describes an article in The Wrap recently.
This new pin certainly celebrates that spirit of togetherness that unifies the group throughout the female-led film. In fact, “Turning Red” marked a milestone for Pixar with it being the first exclusively female-led film ever made by the studio. Director Domee Shi led the film. Previously, she directed the Oscar-winning short, “Bao.”
