Former Disney CEO Bob Iger Has a New Job
For all of those desperately hoping that Bob Iger would make a return to Disney, it’s looking less likely with today’s news! Today, the former Disney CEO announced that he will be joining the board of new “avatar technology” metaverse company Genies. According to a recent piece in MyNewsLA.com Iger is also investing an undisclosed sum in the firm.
“I’ve always been drawn to the intersection between technology and art, and Genies provides unique and compelling opportunities to harness the power of that combination to enable new forms of creativity, expression and communication,” Iger said in a statement.
Iger even took to Twitter to tease his new role:

According to a company statement, Iger will help the company “navigate its mission to empower humans to create their own avatar ecosystems.” “We believe that avatar ecosystems are going to be the mobile apps of web3,” Genies CEO Akash Nigam said in a statement. “An ambitious vision calls for rare mindshare and I can’t think of a better creative and product thinker than Bob to collaborate with in bringing this all to reality.”
We know that the company was founded back in 2017. According to a piece on CNBC, Genies mobile app allows users to create their own custom digital avatars. For those unfamiliar, avatars are 3-D cartoon versions of themselves. This can be used on social media profiles and eventually in the metaverse.
For those unfamiliar, Bob Iger was the CEO of Disney for 15 years where we oversaw the company’s investments in tech including acquiring Pixar and launching the Disney+ streaming network. Iger stepped down as Disney’s CEO in 2020 and was succeeded by current president Bob Chapek. Iger left Disney’s board at the end of last year.
So now he’ll be turning his attention to the metaverse and a company that claims to have a 99% celebrity avatar market share. Genies previous partnered with entertainment giants like Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group to serve as their “official avatar provider” which means that noteworthy entertainers can create their persona for navigation within the “web3” online universe.
