Oscar-Winning Actor William Hurt Has Passed Away at the Age of 71
It is with a heavy heart that we here at MickeyBlog share the news that legendary actor William Hurt passed away today at his home in Portland, Oregon. He was 71 years old and now cause of death was mentioned.
The Julliard-trained Hurt has many critically acclaimed films under his belt including Body Heat, The Big Chill and The Accidental Tourist. Hurt would go on to win his first Oscar for Kiss of the Spider Woman. He would also receive Oscar Nominations for his roles in Children of a Lesser God, Broadcast News and A History of Violence.
In the Disney-sphere, Hurt is best known for his turn as Angus Tuck in Tuck Everlasting. Most recently, he also made several appearances as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross including, The Incredible Hulk (2008), Captain America: Civil War (2016), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019) and Black Widow (2021).
Hurt was born in Washington D.C. in 1950. His father was in the state department and as a boy Hurt spent time in Guam and Hawaii. After his parents separated when he was 6, he moved to New York City where his mom got a job at Time Inc. She would go on to marry Henry Luce III who was the son of the founder of time.
At the Julliard, where Hurt received his acting training, he studied alongside Christopher Reeve, Robin Williams and Mandy Patinkin.
In addition to his work on the big screen, Hurt also earned an Emmy nomination in 2009 for his role as scientist Daniel Purcell on FX’s Damages. He would earn another nomination two years later for his role as Secretary of the Treasury Henry Paulson in HBO’s Too Big to Fail. Recent TV appearances include Humans, Goliath, and Condor.
Hurt leaves behind four children.
