Meet Disney World’s K-9 Security Teams
As you enter the Disney theme parks you may have seen security making the rounds with dogs to keep both guests and cast members safe. There is an incredible team of K9 handlers and their trained K9s at the theme parks.
Let’s meet a few of these dynamic duos below:
Michelle & Jordan (golden retriever, 5 years old)
Meet Michelle who started her journey in security while getting her Animal Sciences degree at the University of Tennessee. Michelle began her Disney career five years ago. After learning about the K9 unit early in her career, it became Michelle’s goal to work up to become a K9 handler.
As you can see from the picture above, she has been paired with Jorden, the golden retriever. We’re told Jordan loves rolling around to scratch his back and loves to eat!
Michelle and other handlers are trained to keep guests and cast safe while enjoying the magic at Disney. However, during their doggie down time the dogs get to reap the rewards. “Our dogs work for their toys,” mentioned Michelle. “Toys are always super exciting. [Jordan] currently works for what’s called Julius ball and it’s basically a ball on a rope. He loves it because he bounces it around and is always excited when I pull it out.”
Michelle said that one of her favorite parts about maintaining the magic is Disney security going around and delivering stickers. She went on to say that another perk of the job is getting to know the other cast members in the security team as well as the K9s that accompany them.
Jenn & Chore (Belgian Malinois, 4 years old)
Now its time to meet Jenn who works alongside her Belgian Malinois named Chore. Jenn’s career started with the US Navy after which she was hired directly onto the K9 team. She wanted to become a K9 officer after seeing one in elementary school. She honed in her skills on working with dogs because of the important bond that forms between dog and handler. Jenn has been at Disney for over three years.
Jenn says of her relationship with Chore, “There’s this unconditional bond – there’s really nothing like it. It’s the amount of trust and love you have with your K9 that makes [the relationship] special.”
The K9 until at Disney works hard to pair handlers up with the perfect pooch. Best of all, when its time for the pooch to retire from service, the handlers are given the option of taking their pop home with them! Jenn spoke about what being a member of the K9 unit meant to her personally saying, “You can tell that [guests] love us being there and we love being there for them. It means a lot to me when they take the time to recognize us, it’s very sweet.”
