The award marked DeBose’s first nomination and win. Additionally, she was nominated for an Oscar and won the Golden Globe for her supporting role.
Debose’s nomination came alongside other talented actresses including Caitriona Balfe (Belfast), Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley), Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog) and Ruth Negga (Passing).
Significant Role
According to the Hollywood Reporter, DeBose reflects that “It’s an honor to be seen, it’s an honor to be an Afro-Latina, an openly queer woman of color, a dancer, a singer and an actor. It’s indicative of me that I will not be the last and that’s the important part. Whatever firsts are attached are name are immensely special to me but focused on if I’m the first of anything then I will not be the last.”

“West Side Story” is a lavish musical production following the young love of Tony and Maria in 1957 New York City. A moving score, talented cast, and amazing dance brings to life the young love and intense rivalries between the Jets and the Sharks.
The musical includes an amazing cast: Ansel Elgort (Tony); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina) and newcomer Rachel Zegler (Maria).
