What’s Disney Like in August 2022?
Everyone dreams about spending a summer vacation at Walt Disney World.
After all, the marketing slogan doesn’t lie. It IS the Most Magical Place on Earth.
Still, if you’re planning to spend time in Orlando this summer, you’ll need to know a few things.
What will Disney be like this August? Read on to learn more!
Let’s Talk about August Visits
An August vacation at Walt Disney World will put a smile on anyone’s face.
You’ll discover so much to do, and you’ll have plenty of time to do it. Now that Disney has introduced a new front-of-line line queue system, you can do what you want!
Presuming that you buy Disney Genie+ and a Lightning Lane experience each day, that’s nine attractions you’re guaranteed to do during a single park visit!
For many years now, park management has calculated that nine represents the magic number for guests.
When you experience nine attractions, you’re likely to leave Disney feeling great about your vacation!
I highly recommend that you pay for Disney Genie+ during your trip because August crowds are higher than average.
With kids out of school, at least for the first half of the month, the various parks fill up with happy families.
Think of Disney Genie+ as your ace in the hole to ensure that you’ll spend less time standing in line. That’s where all the aggravation is at theme parks.
Otherwise, August visits are ideal. As you’re about to learn, the weather, although hot, is generally lovely. Also, some events will make your visit that much better!
Let’s Talk about the Weather
You will want to dress light during an August visit. While Florida’s weather is guaranteed to be better than in your area, it’s still hot there.
According to WeatherSpark, daily high temperatures in Orlando range from 85 to 94 degrees. The overall average high temperature is 90 degrees.
Yes, that’s pretty hot! Thankfully, Disney designed the entire park with this potential problem area in mind.
You’ll find wet rides, covered sitting areas, and countless indoor attractions. All of them will allow you to escape the heat as needed.
Still, I’d suggest that you pack light-colored outfits. Dark colors, especially black, absorb heat, which can add several degrees to the outside temperature.
In case you’re wondering, Orlando does cool off at night. The average low temperature is 76 degrees, with a range from 73 to 78 degrees.
In other words, it’ll never feel oppressively hot once the sun sets. And remember that whenever you’re running hot, a dip in the pool solves the problem anyway!
Let’s Talk about Disney Events in August
Did you hear about Walt Disney World’s 50th-anniversary celebration last October?
Yes, on October 1st, the theme park turned half a century old! What will shock you about this is that the party’s still going on at Walt Disney World!
I’m serious! Disney is throwing an 18-month celebration of the achievement. So, all the anniversary events from last fall remain available!
You can watch fireworks shows like Disney Enchantment, special 50th-anniversary parades, and even a daily kite show called Disney KiteTails!
By the time August rolls around, you should get to be among the first to ride the new 50th-anniversary roller coaster as well!
Okay, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind technically has no affiliation with the 50th birthday party.
Still, Disney has timed its opening to coincide with the big gala affair ongoing at Walt Disney World.
Remarkably, the superhero coaster will be the second new ride to open since the parks turned 50! And we may get another one by the party’s end, just not in time for an August trip!
The other new attraction is Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. This ride possesses near-universal acclaim for its joyous tone and decidedly Disney storytelling.
Imagineers somehow continue to dazzle with their innovations even after all these decades of excellence!
The other Walt Disney World event of note is the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival.
Disney hasn’t officially confirmed dates for this event yet. However, expectations are that it’ll debut in mid-July and run throughout August.
As such, you can eat and drink some of the tastiest items at Walt Disney World…and for much cheaper than at the various restaurants here!
Plus, you can watch rock concerts at America Gardens Theatre in the World Showcase.
Folks, there’s a reason why the Food & Wine Festival is synonymous with EPCOT for many people. It’s the gold standard by which all other festivals are judged.
You’ll love visiting EPCOT during this event!
Let’s Talk about Central Florida Events in August
The greater Orlando area includes a population of more than 2.6 million people. For this reason, entertainment options abound.
Some of them are permanent, while others are only available for a short time.
For example, I often segment local entertainment into three categories: Broadway plays, sporting events, and concerts.
Sadly, Fairwinds Broadway in Orlando is taking some time off this summer. As a result, the Broadway in Orlando schedule is blank from mid-June through mid-December.
I suspect that this is for the best possible reason, though. Hamilton has announced an Orlando residency in 2022 and 2023.
The timing here feels less than coincidental to me. So, I’m saying you’re out of luck for Broadway at the moment.
In reality, you may have the best possible luck, as Hamilton’s THE Broadway show of note these days.
With sports, Orlando hosts two professional sports teams. However, the Orlando Magic won’t be playing in August, as they’ll be between seasons.
Meanwhile, Orlando City will host soccer matches on August 6th, August 28th, and August 31st. One of those dates may work for you.
As for concerts, one artist towers above the rest. Bad Bunny will tear down the house on August 5th, proving why he’s arguably the hottest act in music today.
Depending on your age, you also might enjoy two other options. Steely Dan is playing multiple shows early in August, while Roger Waters takes the stage on August 25th.
If you’re under the age of 60, you’ll need to google these people. They were once famous, I swear.
Otherwise, August is a relatively quiet month for entertainment in Orlando.
Final Thoughts
I have strong opinions about August vacations at Walt Disney World.
If you have the choice, you can and should wait until September. The crowds are MUCH lower, though. But, of course, that’s the thing.
In August, the crowds are bigger because most people cannot wait until September. Also, August is when the kids are out of school, and work’s not as crazy.
People get back to business after Labor Day and turn into workaholics again.
As such, August is a highly desirable time to travel to Orlando. The weather and crowds are both better than July, and Food & Wine is going strong.
You’ll have a delightful time, so much so that you’ll likely start fantasizing about your next Disney trip before you have even gotten home from the August one!
