The Characters Have Come Out to Celebrate Lunar New Year at Shanghai Disney
Since last month, we’ve been celebrating the Year of the Tiger including with a visit to the Lunar New Year Festival at Disney California Adventure. Now, it’s time to head over to Shanghai Disney where the characters are out in full force to celebrate the year ahead!.
Best of all, the costuming team at Shanghai Disney has been hard at work creating special costumes for some of our favorite Disney friends. They’ve created some unique looks that draw their inspiration from traditional Chinese style. Each of the pieces that we’ll share below were hand sewn and the culmination of months of work.
Fifteen different outfits were crafted including those for Mickey, Minnie as well as Duffy and the gang. The costume team gathered inspiration from time-honored Lunar New Year designs. This including working together to come up with ideas and revisions before the perfect garments were created.
This year was the FIRST time the team designed traditional Chinese costumes for these characters and its all in the details. Be on the lookout for the cross-collars, wide sleeves and special touches. Do you see the jade pendant above in Mickey’s hat!? Did you know that Minnie is sporting a Chinese fan in her bow and a deer pattern that represents good luck in the year ahead!?
Next up is Donald Duck and Daisy are dressed from head to to in Lunar New Year outfits that dazzle. Donald’s outfit is inspired by traditional Chinese opera costumes. This includes pin-shaped embroidery on the shoulders represent wishes for a long and prosperous life. Then there’s Daisy which includes a Chinese hairpin, floral embroidery and tassel decorations.
Next up its the dynamic duo Chip & Dale who are wearing tiger-print acrobatic suits and tiger mask hats. On their waists you’ll notice a lucky orange. These are exchanged as gifts during Lunar New Year as they are thought to bring good luck.
Above are Goofy and Pluto and we’re told that their outfits represent justice and peace in the New Year. Let’s start with Goofy’s garb which was inspired by the traditional uniforms worn by swordsmen in Chinese history. It is adorned with patterns of Chinese coins to symbolize luck and a peaceful and abundant new year.
On Pluto’s collar you’ll also see various motifs thought to represent good fortune!
It wouldn’t be the Year of the Tiger without Tigger. During his celebrating at Shanghai Disney, Tigger has been sporting a two-piece suit featuring long sleeves and Chinese-style vest. His outfit is inspired by the clothing of the Qing Dynasty. The embroidery on his outfit features a carp jumping over a dragon gate, this symbolizes the Chinese idiom about achieving success through hard work and perseverance.
Duffy and Friends look positively fantastic. Notice that their costumes feature a lot of pink which symbolizes the advent of Spring. There’s also elements that honor the Year of the Tiger.
Duffy’s costume features a Tiger-inspired hat. Next to him is ShellieMay who is supposed to represent the “Tiger of Love” with her costume.
Above you can see Gelatoni who has a similar costume to Duffy but he is meant to serve as the “Tiger of Production.” He’s joined by ‘Olu Mel who is the “Tiger of Wealth” and hoping for prosperity in the new year.
Next up is Stella Lou with a costume representing the “Tiger of Peace.” She is joined by CookieAnn who is bringing the good fortune as the “Tiger of Luck.”
Finally its LinaBell who is brining wishes of prosperity and harvest as “Tiger of Blessing”
