Lin Manuel Miranda Talks Potential Broadway Future for ‘Encanto’
One of the biggest movies of the year, and a soundtrack that has taken the world by storm, could one day see life on the stage according to Lin-Manuel Miranda, who talks about a potential Broadway future for Encanto.
Rarely does one thing take on a life of its own the way that the smash hit song, “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” has; and it has given new life to the incredible Disney film, Encanto.
Telling the story of the Madrigal’s- a Columbian family who are established as the cornerstone for a community due to their various superpowers- Encanto has generated incredible conversations about generational roles within a family unit, and just what it means to be special.
What has certainly aided the film’s spectacular reception is the masterful songwriting work of the immensely talented Lin-Manuel Miranda; the mastermind behind Hamilton, In The Heights, and most recently the director of the incredible Tick, Tick…Boom!
With his background on the stage, and his influence in bringing the music of Encanto to life, there is perhaps to person better suited to speak on the potential stage production of the now-beloved film, and whether it could have a future on Broadway.
For Lin-Manuel Miranda, it is certainly possible.
Speaking with E! News, Miranda was confident in the musical production certainly having a future on the stage, stating, “I think it weirdly lends itself well. They don’t always, you know? Like, I can’t picture a Moana broadway musical. I don know how you’d do the ocean.”
Miranda continued, “My first draft of the last song in the movie, ‘All of You,’ was like seven minutes long. It was so late in production that they were like, ‘Lin, we won’t make the movie in time. You actually have to cut this down,’ So I’ve got the Broadway finale like in the chamber.”
Although there are no plans to adapt Encanto for Broadway, Miranda is open to exploring the world of the Madrigal family.
When discussing a potential sequel, or TV series, Mirando concluded, “There are so many stories in that house, that it would be wonderful to expand on it.”
With Disney’s success in adapting their beloved musicals to the stage, it certainly wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility to see Encanto be the next to inherit that mantle; and we would absolutely be here for it!
