Disney Loses Rights To ‘Children of Blood and Bone’
So here is some depressing news for fans of novelist Tomi Adeyemi’s incredible trilogy Children of Blood and Bone. Back in 2020, Disney proudly announced that Lucasfilm had the rights to bring the story to the big screen. However, since that time Lucasfilm has let the rights to the film lapse making it a hot Hollywood commodity that was eventually picked up by Paramount which will move ahead with the project.
According to a recent piece in DEADLINE, Adeyemi will adapt, pen the script and executive produce the project. Furthermore, Paramount has said that it will be fast-tracking the first film and has Wyck Godfrey, Marty Bowen and Karen Rosenfelt lined up as producers.
As of going to print, two of the three books in Adeyemi’s trilogy have already been released Children of Blood and Bone and Children of Virtue and Vengeance were published by Henry Holt Books with the third instalment expected to be released in 2023.
This feels like a bit of a loss for Disney and Co as Children of Blood and Bone has become a phenomenon with YA readers due to the way it transformed expectations of world-building fantasy.
According to DEADLINE after Lucasfilm let the rights lapse on the project, Adeyemi took it to the market where numerous studios including Universal, Amazon and Netflix were vying for the title. Paramount won out in the end with an offer which (according to DEADLINE blew away all of the others and included a 7-figure screenwriting guarantee and more creative control for Adeyemi. They were also able to offer a guaranteed theatrical release.
Trust us when we say that though this is a project that we will no longer be covering at MickeyBlog from a Disney Studios standpoint, we still remain keenly interested in what the future holds for the trilogy’s transition to the big screen!
