Disney World’s Environmentality of the Year Award Recipients Announced
We’ve got some exciting news to share with you regarding Disney World’s commitment to caring for the environment! Each year, teams that go above and beyond when it comes to their commitment toward a sustainable future are given the Environmentality Chamption of the Year Award!
runDisney
First up, cast members supporting runDisney have always done their best to reduce waste during race weekends by encouraging guests, volunteers, participants and vendors to recycle cans, plastics, bottles, cardboard and even clothing. Starting back in 2018, runDisney launched their first food scrap collection program. Through this initiative, they have helped divert more than 6,300 lbs. of banana peels from the landfill just over two race seasons!!
To put that in perspective, that is as much as the weight of 18 Dumbo the Flying Elephant Ride Vehicles!
We’re told that the banana peels collected were converted into renewable energy. We are also excited to report that the program will continue into 2022 including the upcoming Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend.
Disney’s Contemporary Resort
Over at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, cast members become top recyclers by creating a system that made recycling as easy as possible. They kept a close eye on collection bins, ensured that recyclables were not sent to the landfill and were extra careful to keep food waste, mixed recycling and soft plastic bins separated to avoid cross-contamination.
In addition, staff at the Contemporary identified areas around the resort that did have recycling bins and added more to the property as needed.
Over at Chef Mickeys in the main atrium of the Contemporary Resort, the Culinary team went above and beyond this year reducing 19,000 pounds of food waste at the restaurant. Special technology was designed to track and reduce food waste. Best of all, the team at Chef Mickey’s were able to share their findings with other eateries at Disney World to lessen their waste.
Chef Anthony at Chef Mickey’s also helped eliminate the use of ice for buffet cooling and introduced reusable frozen plates. Though it sounds like such a simple and small step, this measure actually saves over 500 pounds of ice a day which equals 22,750 gallons of water a year!
Facilities Asset Management (FAM)
The Walt Disney Company is committed to achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. This year the Facilities Asset Management Design Team helped reduce greenhouse gas emissions and conserve water at Walt Disney World and beyond.
Some of the highlights include improving the efficiency of air conditioning systems, designing more efficient water heating systems and make sure that water features operate properly to conserve water.
It is through their guidance that Walt Disney World Resort has reduced emissions by 35%!
Congratulations to all of the amazing recipients above! Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for more Walt Disney World news and updates.
