‘Return of the Jedi’, ‘WALL-E’ and ‘Flowers and Trees’ Added To National Film Registry
Congratulations are in order for three awesome Disney-related films that have recently been added to the National Film Registry. Flowers and Trees (1932), Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) and WALL•E (2008) were included in the list of 25 influential films to be inducted into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
Selections to the registry are made based on their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance to preserve the film heritage of the United States. Let’s take a closer look at each of these awesome titles.
Flowers and Trees
This film highlights the magic of cinema complete with singing birds, trees and more and features spectacular colors. Flowers and Trees is know as a landmark of Disney animation and would ultimately convince Disney to make future Silly Symphony Shorts in color. If you’ve not seen the short, its definitely worth checking out for its really impressive hand-drawn animation in vibrant Technicolor hues.
The film Flowers and Trees won the Academy Award for Best Cartoon.
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi was one of two titles included in the registry this year that really drew public support. It received the most public votes. The third film in the original Star Wars trilogy, the film was directed by Richard Marquand from a story by George Lucas. The film launches Lucas’ original characters including Luke, Lea, Han Solo, C-3PO, R2-D2 and more on a series of new intergalactic adventures.
From Tatooine to the deep forests of Endor, the film spans the Star Wars universe and introduces some important characters including the Ewoks and Jabba the Hutt.
WALL•E
WALL•E, directed by Andrew Stanton is an incredible blend of animation, science fiction, an ecological cautionary tale AND a robot love story. The story centers around lonely trash-collecting robot WALL•E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter: Earth Class), who meets EVE, (Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluator).
The film won and Oscar for Outstanding Animated Feature and won over audiences with its impressive set design, skillful animation and emotive characters that were able to transcend their mechanics to convey a story of love and friendship.
