Disneyland Cast Members Settle Union Contract and Avoid Strike
According to news coming in from OC Register, Disneyland employees steered clear of a strike and approved a new contract that includes a pay hike of $3 per hour (which is roughly 19% over three years) as well as bonuses for long-time workers.
Cast Members that were represented by the Master Services Council held the vote yesterday (December 3rd) to accept the contract.
A Disneyland representative had the following to say about reaching the union agreement, “The Disneyland resort is pleased that cast members of the Disneyland park represented by the Master Services Council ratified a new collective bargaining agreement.” The spokesperson continued, “Cast members from Disney California Adventure park and Downtown Disney District previously ratified the same offer on November 17th. We are proud of the competitive wage and benefit offer, which provides historical increases over three years, continuing to outpace the California minimum wage.”
Negotiations over the contract were contentious with the Master Service Council rejecting the proposal back on November 17th. Had the contract not been approved yesterday the union would have held a strike.
For those unfamiliar, the Master Services Council represents about 10,000 cast members across Disneyland, Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney. These members work in a variety of positions including retail, custodial, ticketing and more.
As the OC Register tells us, the union represents about 40% of the 25,000 cast members at Disneyland Resort.
Under the agreement, the minimum wage is going up from $15.50 to $18.50 per hour which is a 19% increase. This is over a three year period. This means that the hourly wage is over the state suggested minimum which will rise from $14 to $15 per hour in 2022.
In addition, cast members with 20 years of employment get a $2,000 bonus for full time and $1,000 for part time and 10 year employees get a $1,000 bonus full time and $500 part time.
