For those unfamiliar, Encanto follows a magical Colombian family that has a whimsical homestead in the mountains. The story centers on Mirabel, the one member of the Madrigals family that doesn’t seem to have any special powers.
When the magic surrounding the family’s home is in danger causing their home’s foundation to crack as their powers start to dwindle it is up to Mirabel to save the day!

Critics are quick to highlight its stunning animation style, diversity and spellbinding songs some of which were written by none other than Lin-Manuel Miranda. As you can see from the image below, it is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 92% score!
Here’s a quick look at what some of the critics were saying ahead of last night’s opening.
“The computer animation, some of the best from any major studio in the last several years, presents a dazzling cofabulation of hues and a meticulous weaving of precious details.” says Maya Phillips at the New York Times.

Caroline Siede at the AV Club highlights the ways in which Disney’s 60th animated film is turning classic tropes on their head. In her piece she notes that unlike many of Disney’s previous heroines, Mirabel not only has both parents but an extended family. “How fun to see a Disney heroine with cousins she says.
Others like Owen Gleiberman at Variety are quick to point out that Lin-Manuel Miranda’s talents are on full display with this project offering, “The songs, by Lin-Manuel Miranda, are syncopatedly infectious, word-weavingly clever, and unabashedly romantic; they keep the film bopping.”

Last, but certainly not least, Scott Mendelson at Forbes praises Mirabel as a protagonist saying, “Mirabel joins the ranks among one of the more realized Disney heroines, partially because she’s not required to hit ‘bad-ass female warrior who isn’t your everyday princess’ notes.” He continues, “If anything, the awkward misfit is who would usually be a supporting character in a conventional animated epic, and that adds to her universal relatability.”
This is fantastic news for Encanto and we are now even more excited than ever to see it at the theaters! We’ll leave you with the trailer for the film below:
