‘Encanto’ Estimated To Bring In $70 Million at the Global Box Office Thanksgiving Weekend
The future is looking very bright for Disney’s 60th Animated Feature Film ‘Encanto’ which opens this weekend. The film is directed by Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Charise Castro Smith. Insiders are estimated that it should pull in $70 million over Thanksgiving weekend with $35 – $40 being at the domestic box office and $35 million abroad.
As DEADLINE tells us, Encanto is the second animated wide release to have an exclusive theatrical release in 2021. The first with Ron’s Gone Wrong from the now Disney-owned 20th Century Studios.
Encanto arrives four years after Disney’s previous Thanksgiving Weekend hit Coco. The film tells the story of Mirabel (voiced by Stephanie Beatriz) who lives in a huge house with her family all of whom have some sort of magical ability- except for her.
The action of the film centers around Mirabel’s quest to fit in with the rest of her family. The film also boasts a soundtrack featuring songs by the toast of Broadway, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Though how films will far during the pandemic continues to be met with some uncertainty, Encanto did earn a promising $2.5 million in US pre-sales. Disney generally has a good track-record when it comes to Thanksgiving releases. As DEADLINE tells us Wreck-It-Ralph brought in $49 million, Frozen $93.9 million, Moana $82 million, Coco $72.9 million and Tangled $68.7 million.
Encanto is booked at 3,800+ theatres, comprised of 600+ Premium Large Format screens and 1,300 3D locations. Over 300 theaters in key markets will offer the Disney movie in Spanish dubbed and/or subtitled showtimes.
There is no China release date for Encanto as of yet and many theaters remain closed in the country due to the coronavirus. Likewise, Australia, New Zealand and Vietnam are also places where Encanto will not open just now.
It remains to be seen what king of impact COVID will have on the global box office for Encanto. We do know that Austria just went through a three week lockdown, there are restrictions in the Scandinavian countries and Germany has canceled the Christmas markets and sporting events. However, the film is expected to perform well in France, Japan and Russia.
We also know that the film has been dubbed into 41 languages. The film is set in Colombia and for that reason it was dubbed 100% with Colombian actors with many of the original cast returning to their roles.
